Krauss Maffei’s new 36D twin screw extruder increases pipe throughput

Krauss Maffei Extrusion of Munich Germany, (a world leader in plastics machinery) new 36D single venting twin-screw extruder series developed in conjunction with Wavin N.V. (one of Europe’s largest Pipe producers) has been enthusiastically embraced by pipe producers around the globe.

The 36D twin screw extruder is able to produce a comprehensive range of pipe formulations, including PVC pipe (smooth, corrugated or foam-core) PVC-U (pipes made with high filler loadings of more than 30 parts by weight), PVC-M (modified PVC) and PVC-O (bi-oriented pipes).

The specially designed screw known as HPG (High Performance Geometry) combines an extended preheating zone and an extended metering zone with a new dynamic mixing head. The screws are fitted with internal self regulating temperature controls, which are extremely efficient for the cooling of the screw tips and uniform preheating of material by means of the screw root. This contributes to a 15% energy saving and optimum melt homogeneity which reduces the degree of rippling on the pipe surface and improves quality.

The longer preheating zone (30% more than the previous series) increases the versatility for processing all kind of formulations and meets the requirements of advanced material processing, better mixing in of colour batches and efficient preheating of highly filled formulations. The screw processes highly filled mixtures such as those with high chalk content or up to 100% of recycled material as used in the middle layer for some applications.

Overall the machine can increase through-put performance by up to 10%, providing producers with an extrusion line with high performance, versatility and excellent  value for money.
